"With You I'm Born Once more" is a 1979 duet written by Carol Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 movement picture Fast Break. It was performed past Motown recording artists Baton Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited every bit Syreeta) and became an international hit for the duo, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100[two] and number 2 on the UK singles chart.[iii]

History [edit]

The music from Fast Break was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Carol Connors put words to 4 of the songs on the soundtrack album. Connors recalls, "I had written near of the lyrics to 'With You I'm Born Again' in 22 minutes, but I couldn't find two words and it was driving me crazy."[4] The right words came to her on her way to an ice cream parlor, where she requested a pencil and paper along with her order. "I had finally establish information technology—the line I was seeking--'Come show me your kindness, in your arms I know I'll observe this'—and I wanted to get it down on paper."[iv]

Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright as Preston'southward partner for the two duets that had been written for the picture,[v] and each singer also had a solo number to cut for the soundtrack album as well. Connors recalled, "Billy and Syreeta were originally non very fond of the thought of recording together—they each wanted to exercise their ain thing, but this worked out extremely well for both of them."[four] The reluctant pair were surprised by the success of "With You I'm Built-in Over again". "Though both liked the song, they never dreamed of it being a hit single."[6]

Connors noted the impression some were left with by the song and Preston. "When David Shire heard Billy Preston play the song on the organ, he said to me, 'Now I know why he's a star.'" Connors also shared, "The late peachy Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the barber chair when he beginning heard the vocal on the radio and stood straight up in anaesthesia, narrowly missing getting his throat cut by the pair of scissors. True story."[iv]

But radio airplay and record sales almost never happened. The Fast Interruption soundtrack was released in early 1979, when disco nonetheless permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo'due south recordings from the anthology, the trip the light fantastic tune "Become for It", was chosen as the single that would be issued to promote the anthology. That selection barely fabricated a paring in the charts, spending 1 week on the Disco singles nautical chart at number 80 in Billboard magazine[7] and "bubbling under" the Billboard Hot 100 for ane week at number 108.[2]

The film did non get much attention, either, and Preston described their next endeavour to requite "With You I'm Born Again" more than exposure, explaining that "after the film didn't do very well, the [soundtrack] anthology didn't sell well. Nosotros pulled it off that album and put it on mine."[6] Preston's album, Late at Nighttime, came out later in 1979, but even with that reissue of the song, Preston insisted that "we still didn't think of it every bit a unmarried."[vi] Information technology did, withal, brainstorm to get airplay in the European market[6] and was finally released as a unmarried at the end of the year.

Some other hurdle the vocal had to overcome was the fact that its title did not click with some tape buyers. "Connors says her only regret about 'With Yous I'm Built-in Again' is that she didn't title it 'Come Bring Me Your Softness'. 'Berry Gordy called me to let me know we had a monster hit on our easily but that early many people were going into record stores asking for "Come up Bring Me Your Softness", and some record sales were lost as a outcome.'"[4] The fact that the phrase "born again" is often associated with Christianity may have too been confusing, and Connors admitted, "Many thought the song had religious overtones, but Robert Culp and I were lovers at the time, and that's the way we felt about 1 another. Culp was the inspiration."[four] The singers likewise felt the song could be interpreted in a religious context as well as being a romantic dear vocal. Preston explained, "When we saw Fast Pause, we understood it was a romantic song. Just I think of it every bit religious because God is dear, so it all inter-relates."[half-dozen] This religious aspect would later be played up by the show Glee in the flavour two episode "Duets", when the characters Finn Hudson (played by Cory Monteith) and Rachel Berry (played by Lea Michele) perform a shortened version of the vocal dressed as a priest and a Catholic schoolgirl respectively.

Chart success [edit]

"With Yous I'one thousand Born Again" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue of the magazine dated December 8, 1979, and peaked at number iv over the course of 29 weeks.[two] The following calendar week marked its get-go appearance on the Uk singles nautical chart[8] and on Billboard's list of the 50 well-nigh popular Adult Contemporary songs in the U.Due south., and both nautical chart runs resulted in a number two showing.[ix] [three] It also started three weeks on the magazine'southward Hot Soul Singles chart in the January 19, 1980, issue and got equally high as number 86.[10] It was Preston's biggest hitting in 5 years and the biggest popular striking of Wright's career.
